In this model, teachers facilitate student learning in an inquiry-based model of instruction. Using questions, experiences, and research, students gain a deep understanding of the science concepts. The 5E Unit Plans guide students through their learning experience.

Teachers facilitate discovery through questioning, encouraging, and supporting research projects. The 5E Unit Plans provide teacher support, questions to ask, materials lists, and three options for inquiry-based activities at each stage of the process.

They include hands-on activities and high-interest lessons to engage all styles and levels of learning. There is also flexibility within the unit plans to allow for longer or shorter teaching periods and to allow for correlation with the Science Stations. For each Performance Expectation, we have created a unit plan that can be tailored to your needs and schedule.

There are options for finishing the process in 5 days, days, and two weeks. You may use this product on its own or weave in our Science Stations. We have specific suggestions where each station fits best into the different phases of the 5E Instructional Model.

All of the units follow a similar format and include:. While we offer three parts for each section of the 5Es, we also offer a condensed teaching timeline and tell you which parts to focus on if you are not able to teach the entire unit. Each unit comes with teacher notes and materials that include background knowledge, a timeline, materials, misconceptions for the topic, and detailed lesson plans. Also included are vocabulary cards that match the vocabulary in each science station as well as big idea posters and exit tickets.

The exit tickets, vocabulary cards, and big idea posters can be used throughout the unit to check for understanding and guide student learning. The purpose of the Engage section of the 5E instructional model is to pique student interest and spark curiosity in the current topic. Students are encouraged to connect their prior knowledge to a current situation or example given to them by the teacher.

The three lesson parts of the engage section vary from watching a video, having a discussion about a picture, to analyzing what is happening in smaller pictures. You can find out more information about the Engage section in this blog post. The purpose of the Explore section of the 5E instructional model is to allow students to explore the new topic and gather information about it.

In this section, students are given the opportunity to think creatively and build science skills.

You can see two of the parts of this section above. In one part, students explore constructing a slide. In another part, students read about slides and the effects of the surface, height, and shape of the slide. Remember at this stage students are not yet taught the vocabulary and key concepts, but they are exploring those topics through hands-on investigations.

You can read more about the Exploration phase in this blog post. The purpose of the Explain section of the 5E instructional model is to allow students to analyze their findings from the Explore station and make explanations of their observations. In the Explain section, students are taught the key concepts and vocabulary.

Again, we provide three parts to the sections. One part has students reflect on their Explore activities and analyze it. Another part has students read a passage. We have provided the passage in three formats. The 5E Model of Instruction was exactly what I needed to streamline the process of planning and implementing a student-led inquiry-based learning method. It provides a template, a pattern for lesson planning, and guides the teacher in this better way of teaching science.

This blog post is part of a series of posts on the 5E Instructional Model for teaching science. The first two posts in the series explain why we love the 5E model and why teachers should use the 5E model. This post gives an overview of each component of the 5E Model. In the 5E Instructional Model, science instruction is primarily a student-led and inquiry-based. The teacher is a facilitator, guiding the student through questions, investigations, experiences, and research. In the end, students arrive at a deep understanding of fundamental scientific concepts.

Each stage of the model serves as a foundation to the next, creating a coherent model that frames lessons, activities, and units. It has since been improved and refined, bringing it to its current model. In the Engagement stage, the teacher connects the current concept with prior experience and understanding. Students ask questions. Misconceptions are noted by the teacher, but not corrected yet. Students start to develop a framework for the concept to be studied.

By the end of the engagement phase, student interest is piqued and they are ready to explore more about the topic. Once interest has been generated, the student is ready to begin exploring the concept. At this stage, the teacher provides a hands-on activity. Students investigate a problem and begin to pose real questions, develop hypotheses, and test certain variables. The key concepts in the topic are identified and students develop the skills needed to test these.

At this stage, students are refining their laboratory skills as well as their understanding of the scientific method. Students work cooperatively in groups and are provided time to reflect on the results of their investigations. The teacher is not yet providing direct instruction. Rather, he or she is leading students through inquiry-based questions. Even though questions are posed, answers are not yet sought. This is the stage when connections are made.

Prior knowledge is connected to current findings.Teachers Pay Teachers is an online marketplace where teachers buy and sell original educational materials. Guiding Questions: Do we use too much air conditioning? Can we save water when we use the restroom? Assessment: Teacher will informally assess: Do students understand what plants, animals, and humans need to survive? Yes or No. Make sure to use vocab terms to allow for students to recall information Allow students to collect more observations of their individual desktop environment with groups of their desk groups Look at posters teacher has made about preserving the Earth with colorful pictures allows for students to view the environment on a larger scale not just small like their desktop environment.

Guiding Questions: How has our desktop changed? Why do you think the desktop changed? Does the desktop need window light? Do the plants need window light?

Assessment: Science journal individual : Title: 4 Ways I Can Help Our Earth Separate journal page into 4 sections Students draw 4 separate pictures of how they can help the Earth either at school or at home connecting what we have learned at school to their home life Teacher will informally assess students by asking what they are drawing.
